Bradford’s sporting stars were celebrated on Thursday night at the fourth annual Bradford Sports Awards.

Hosted by BBC presenter, Tanya Arnold, over 300 people were in attendance at the Northern Commercials Stadium including Kersten England, Chief Executive of City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council.

Organised by Active Bradford, eighteen awards were handed out on the night, with Horizon Taekwondo Academy enjoying success across a number of categories.

Rising taekwondo star, Jamie Simpson-Kidd, was named Young Sportsman of the Year for a second successive year.  Farah Yasin was announced as the Disability Sportswoman of the Year; and Rick Simpson was the winner of the Coach of the Year accolade ahead of four other finalists, including his wife, Natalie Simpson-Kidd.  A number of other Horizon Taekwondo players were highly commended during the evening.

Commonwealth gold medallist, Natalie Haythornthwaite, was Sportswoman of the Year having been part of the England netball team that enjoyed one of the iconic sporting moments of 2018.  Three-time cycling world champion, Jack Carthy, was named Sportsman of the Year.

Baildon Church of England School won the Active School of the Year, and also claimed the Active Workplace Award, for their initiatives to get staff, pupils and parents more active.

Those involved in Tour de Yorkshire Team Bradford won the Sporting Highlight of the Year for how they made the most of the event to add value to local communities.

Atletico Juniors FC coach, Majid Hussain, was the Volunteer of the Year; with Tony Kingham the recipient of the Special Recognition Award.  Tony has been running the Bradford Schools Athletics Association for a number of years, organising and marshalling a cross country league that regularly attracts over 400 young people to race.  He’s also an integral part of Bingley Harriers and has played a crucial role in the development of the Bradford parkrun event.

“These are always fabulous evenings, and we had another one last night,” said Wayne Jacobs, Chair of Active Bradford.

“These awards promote Bradford, raise the profile of Bradford, and show off Bradford.  That’s what we came here to do, and I think everyone who was part of the night did that very well.”
