Peter Thompson leads Ping Pong 4 U – a small business with a big heart.

Ping Pong 4 U has been set up to enable a wide range of people of all ages and of all abilities to enjoy Adapted Ping Pong Activities (APPA). They have been working with JU:MP since being awarded funding through the JU:MP Award Programme, and have been fortunate to still be able to reach families and continue to deliver ping pong sessions as planned over the last few weeks, albeit in a very different way!

Good quality table tennis packs have been pulled together by Peter; who knows what to look for in a table tennis kit given his many years’ involvement in the sport. The packs, which include a net, bats, balls and various ‘props’ to learn new skills, have then been distributed to families within the JU:MP area through local community groups and organisations.

With a background in coaching, Peter didn’t want to leave the families without any guidance on how to use the equipment so set up a Zoom meeting with a nominated person in each of the groups to learn various skills and games, in conjunction with StreetGames. These skills are then taught to the families by the nominated person using a ‘train the trainer’ approach. The groups also have access to online videos to teach more skills and games, and where people can’t get online, there are written instructions within the packs.

Next Monday, 18th May, will see Ping Pong 4 U’s first online Zoom competition between the groups! Usually, the face to face sessions which Peter delivers would involve an element of healthy competition to bring groups together, so it’s great that this can still happen virtually.

Ping Pong 4 U’s aim is clear: to have fun. By being inclusive in the way skills are taught and delivered, many people with different abilities have been able to experience the joy that sport can bring. It also fosters more interest in table tennis as an activity, which Peter is keen to do having grown up with the sport and hopes this interest will continue with these families following the easing of lockdown.

As table tennis guidance is changing, Peter is keeping an eye on what he needs to do next to be able to continue delivering Adapted Ping Pong Activities. What definitely won’t stop is the delivering of packs to as many people as he can reach. If you are part of an organisation, group or school and you would like to purchase packs for families or individuals that you’re in contact with, get in touch with Peter directly and he will be happy to chat:
